What’s Next?
I recently did something bold — I got two tattoos to raise funds for From Me To You, a brilliant charity that encourages people to write letters to those affected by cancer. The idea was simple but powerful: put something permanent on my skin to create a lasting impact for others. The support was overwhelming. We raised over £2,600, we raised awareness, and for a moment, I felt that beautiful glow of accomplishment.
But barely had the ink dried when the questions started coming in:
“So, what are you going to do next?”
It’s a funny thing, isn't it? This need we have — or others seem to have on our behalf — to immediately move on to the next big challenge, the next headline-worthy act. It’s not unique to me. Ask someone who’s just run a marathon, or climbed a mountain, or finished a novel, and chances are they’ll hear the same thing.
We live in a culture that celebrates the ‘next thing’ more than the moment we’re in. Achievement has become a kind of treadmill — tick one box, move on to the next. But what if we took a breath?
I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved with the tattoo fundraiser. It wasn’t just about ink; it was about connection, empathy, and action. It took planning, courage, and a touch of madness. And I want to enjoy that. I want to sit in that success for a moment, not rush past it.
It doesn’t mean there won’t be a next thing. Knowing me, there absolutely will be — once the spark hits, I’ll be off again. But I also believe in the power of reflection. The power of saying, “That was enough, for now.” Because pausing doesn’t mean stopping. It means honouring the journey just travelled.
So, when people ask me what’s next, here’s my answer:
Right now, I’m still with what just happened. I’m celebrating the difference we made. And when the next adventure calls, I’ll be ready — with sleeves rolled up and probably more ideas than time.
But until then, let’s raise a glass to the now.
